It was the most exciting time of the year “ Onam was just around the corner. She dutifully marked each day leading up to the festival on the calendar with a small tick. But then, she took a few deep, calming breaths and let her mind drift to all the fantastical creatures she had met, in the many folktales her grandmother would read to her. In her minds eye, she saw a beautiful white elephant decorated with gold jewels and flowers. The elephant floated before her eyes before melting away into a mound of white grains of rice. She instantly knew that that would what she would bring to life “ with the rice grains, flour, white blossoms, marigolds and asters. As she worked, the bare floor bloomed into a vision of perfection.
