On the morning of Onam, she woke up especially early, determined to participate in every ritual. She took a cold bath, dressed in her festive best and accessorised with a gold ring her mother had loaned her, for the day. Shed volunteered to make ney appam, sweet rice fritters, for the family and, although she tried her hardest, she was quickly overwhelmed. Fortunately, the final dish (when her mother helped out) surpassed everyones expectation. Thats when she realised that her gold ring was missing and began to panic. Just then, her brother bit into an appam and realised hed bitten off much more than the rice batter. Her face reddened with a mixture of embarrassment and relief, as she realised that on festivals, even an appam could have a golden lining.
