It a story as old as time – all the children in the village made a beeline for the grove on hot summer afternoons. With their bare hands, they’d scramble up the mango trees and pluck the fruit, biting off the stem and sucking its sweet juice. The famer would chase them down, a stick in his hand, his admonishments a stark contrast to their gleeful cries. That morning, the ragtag bunch of mango-pickers found an idyllic spot near a stream to feast on their loot and engage in bouts of mock-wrestling.
He bid his friends goodbye and ran to his grandmothers’, who treated him to his favourite aloo parathas topped with dollops of butter and a tangy smear of mango achar. He could almost savour the taste on his lips, when his mother shook him awake. He was due to attend his final exams at school. Although tense, his mouth tuned into a small smile as he knew he would soon be in his happy place for the upcoming summer holidays.
