Kaashbon-spotting. A term she had coined with her cousins. October train journeys were the most exciting. It is on these journeys that she learnt new games. Coming up with unique names for the sights they caught on the way was one such game. For every Bengali, kaash phool, a kind of tall furry grass, heralds pujo. The grass looked especially charming from a moving train. Their tossing heads tried to keep pace until they fell behind. But somewhere ahead, they caught up in an attempt to reach the destination together. The game was simple, the one who spotted the maximum number of kaash clusters, gets the window seat for five long minutes. Today, when she thinks of the past, her heart is too full for words. How could she make that memory lasting? The memory of a setting sun, tossing white blades and glorious abandon?
While she ponders, she pulls out a dignified white and red cotton saree. And the weave seems to have absorbed her thoughts. Just like that.
